Feeling overwhelmed working from home?

Have you ever pictured yourself working from home without having to go into an office at a prescribed time?

By now, your organization has probably given this recommendation following the declaration of the Covid-19 pandemic by WHO. Whereas for many this new wave of working might have been the norm, for majority working remotely is a new concept.

We understand you might be struggling to get in tune with the normal workflow and the motivation to work independently away from your colleagues! Now that we have been encouraged to distance ourselves socially, it makes it more challenging to coordinate on projects where you were used to brainstorming with your team.

In light of the above, we are sharing five tips on how you can increase your productivity while working remotely.

  1. Maintain The Same Work Routine

Although you don’t have to go into the office or wake up early to beat the traffic, it is crucial to respect the same working hours while at home. If your reporting hours are 8:30 to 5:30 pm, try to maintain the routine while working remotely while incorporating your tea and lunch break as you would in the office.

  1. Set Up Your Home Office

Take a deep breath…we are not asking you to refurnish your house! Science has proven that your environment can positively or negatively dictate your productivity. If you deliberately set aside a part of your house to be your work station, you will treat it as an office. Start by clearing any distractions such as magazines, toys (if you have children), remote control and put your phone away in another room if possible while working.

  1. Protect Your Workspace

Quite literally, you will need to have a conversation with your family, partner or housemates and set ground rules during your working hours. If you stay ahead of any social distractions, you will set yourself up for success!

  1. Take Note Of Your Progress

While working at home, it’s important to note the progress of your projects. This gives you a clear picture of your productivity while holding you accountable. Sharing mid-week updates with details of your work plan with your line manager will also get you in their good books!

  1. Team Communication Is Key

Since you’re working in isolation, it could get a little lonely. Try to do whatever you can to keep things aligned with your existing company culture. Although working remotely changes interactions you were used to with workmates, you can still make sure that the little things you did in the office continue. This might include sending funny, work-appropriate GIFs over WhatsApp; catching up on weekend escapades; or anything else you would normally do by the coffee machine. These little things help reduce feelings of isolation and anxiety.
